We are pleased to announce our upcoming edition of the Finsec Dialogue on “SEBI Mulls Revamping Framework on Alternative Investment Funds", to be held on Google Meet on March 06, 2023 at 05:00 PM.

Recently, SEBI has issued multiple consultation papers (CPs) for substantially revamping the framework surrounding AIFs. The CPs have been introduced to make AIF units similar to other pooled investments, i.e., mutual fund units, etc. For instance, one of the CPs provides for an option to carry forward unliquidated investments in an AIF, similar to the creation of a segregated portfolio for a mutual fund. Another CP proposes for relaxation in the requirement of the eligibility criteria for the Key Investment Team (KIT) of the AIF’s manager.

The CPs have been introduced keeping the objective of investor welfare in mind, with proposed measures such as: dematerialization of AIF units, direct plans and trail models for distribution commissions of AIF units and requirement of investor consent for buying/selling investments to/from associates of AIFs. Lastly, measures have been recommended for bringing in uniformity across the AIF industry regarding valuation of different assets which are unlisted, illiquid, etc.

Most of the proposed measures are welcome by the industry and the investors alike. Through these proposals, SEBI has tried to revamp the whole regulatory regime and attract more capital via AIFs. Thus, in this edition of Finsec Dialogue, we will discuss the major proposals of SEBI in the consultation papers and the implications arising therefrom.
